People have been using natural pesticides for many, many years. In the beginning, they used these ways to keep their homes clean of insects, but probably were not able to use the same methods on their crops.

For example, a large number of flies do not like basil or mint, so if you hang that up in your doorway, you will cut down the number of flies in your home, but doing that in a garden is more tricky. The ancients never found a means of dealing with locusts.

Nowadays, rather than fend off, we would rather to kill. Not only that though, chemicals that are derived from plant life are often man-made, because there is more demand for the pesticide than there are plants. Chemical insecticides are more concentrated as well. So, now we have the issue, is natural insecticide all that natural?

This question is quite troublesome to those who worry about polluting the planet with too many chemicals. In fact, there is a mounting number of people who are troubled about these issues and there has been since the hippy days of the Seventies and even before. Environmentalists worry about the effect mankind is having on our environment by the over use of chemicals, particularly, but not only, insecticides.

This is why natural pesticides have seen a resurrection and why so many insecticide manufacturers love to add the words ‘natural’, ‘environmentally friendly’ or ‘eco friendly’ to their products’ containers. In fact, many are just climbing onto the eco friendly band wagon.

Look on the label, if there is a word you cannot read or do not understand or is over ten letters long, it is almost certainly a chemical. Which is not to say that it cannot be eco-friendly, but just to remind you that it is not completely as natural as it may say on the box.

In fact, there are two camps. There are the naturalists who recognize that some natural products that are in massive demand, have to be man-made because there is not enough natural product and there are the purists who spurn man-made copies completely. For example, the latter group will not buy anything that comes in a pressurized can, but they would consider using a mixture of ingredients in a plastic plunger-type spray.

There is a very slender line indeed between say, man-made citronella mosquito deterrent and citronella essential oil that you have extracted from the citronella plant and mixed with alcohol or water and put into your own plunger-type spray. They are basically the same thing, but not quite are they?

At the end of the day, you are the one with your principles and so the choice is yours. Luckily, we have a fabulous resource for study at our finger tips, namely the Internet. If you have values and you are free-thinking, check out the ingredients of that ‘all natural cockroach killer’ on the Internet, before you part with your money, because there positively are environmentally friendly solutions available and they can be found in the shops, but they are normally on the bottom shelf because they do not produce so much profit.

The discussion on the use of chemical insecticides has been going on since the Second World War and even before.

The question of which is the best termite treatment? is a difficult one to resolve, because the answer depends partly on your point of view on the widespread deployment of chemicals. The discussion on the usage of chemical pesticides has been raging since the Second World War and even before.

In the Forties and Fifties, a lot of countries that had been involved in the fighting had grave bomb and shell damage, so the local governments took advantage of the clean-up to obliterate all the old inner city slums.

As they did so they observed plagues, simply plagues of bed bugs, cockroaches, rats and other pests, so they spread chemical killers such as DDT everywhere in large quantities. A similar process, for different reasons, was carried out in the United States.

This had the desired effect of killing the pests, but there was already unease, that insects may become immune to these pesticides. The use of DDT was later proscribed. The qualms of those who worried about insects becoming immune, were at least partly warranted and so the debate goes on on. In this article, we will look exclusively at: which is the best termite treatment.

There are three basic methods of termite treatment: fumigation, baiting and soil barriers

Fumigation means the gassing of termites. A tent is constructed around the property in question and gas poisonous to termites is pumped into your house from top to bottom and between the outside walls and the tent.

This gas is then forced into every nook and cranny by fans and it is left there for about twenty-four hours. Then the tent is removed and the gas is extracted from the house by the same fans.

The treatment takes three days. You will move out on day one and back in on day three. The gas only kills termites, they say, so all your mice, spiders and cockroaches will be left unscathed. You will get a warranty that the house is free of all termites. However, some people are not enthusiastic about the idea of fumigating.

Baiting necessitates laying bait stations around the house and monitoring them for termite activity. This can be done by yourself or you can have a pest control company do it for you. Once the wooden bait shows evidence of termites, then the bait is poisoned.

The principle is that the poison is taken back to the colony where it is passed on the the others either by physical contact or feeding. This process takes longer to eradicate a colony than the three days of gassing.

Creating a soil barrier means just that, you poison the soil around and underneath your home, so that as soon as a subterranean species of termite burrows into your garden it is stopped dead. Quite literally and subterranean termites are the worst of the three types. However, a lot of people hesitate at the notion of poisoning hundreds of tons of earth just to eradicate termites.

So, the discussion on the question of: which is the best termite treatment? goes on. A lot of it depends on your gut feelings about chemicals, but at the end of the day, ‘you pays your money and you takes your choice’.

Owen Jones, the author of this article, writes on many subjects, but is at present involved with how to get rid of termites.

A fine lawn is a thing of usefulness and beauty. If built right and well cared for, it should last a lifetime. All of us would like to have a beautiful lawn. With a little care and effort there is no reason why we can’t.

The steps for building and maintaining a lawn are important. but simple and easy to follow. The basic rules given in this article are the result of years of research and observation at the Rhode Island Agricultural Experiment Station. Though there will be minor variations between different parts of the country, most of these rules will apply anywhere. Even if your basic lawn-building is already completed, you can find ways of improving it-1-especially this fall, the season for lawn betterment.

A smooth, level lawn is possible only if the ground has been smoothed and leveled before seeding. Take off the topsoil, and pile it to one side. Topsoil is precious, don’t waste it. Then remove all sizable stones, sticks and other debris. Level the subsoil to take out all ridges and depressions. Any major changes in grade are best made here. Loosen the top three or four inches of the subsoil to provide a good bond between subsoil and topsoil. Then spread the topsoil evenly over the subsoil to a depth of at least six inches. It’s important to get it even, for shallow spots in topsoil will often show up as brown spots on the lawn.

Rake the seedbed to get rid of stones, roots and other debris, then roll to bring out any high or low spots. A second raking should take care of these and work the soil down smooth. The more a seedbed is raked and rolled, the smoother the lawn will be. A wooden rake is by far the best to use, and a water ballast roller works well.

For soils low in organic matter, add 1,000 to 1,500 pounds of peat or humus, or three bales of horticultural peatmoss, or one cubic yard of well rotted farm manure per 1,000 square feet of area. Mix it well with the entire six inches of topsoil. This and the lime and fertilizer mentioned below can be worked in with a hand cultivator. A small spreader will be useful for applying the lime and fertilizer.

Add 100 pounds of limestone per 1,000 square feet for strongly acid soils. and 50 pounds for moderately acid soils. Mix it in with the top four or five inches of soil.

The best lawn fertilizer is an 8-6-4 or 8-6-2 commercial lawn fertilizer with about 40 per cent of the nitrogen in natural organic form. This. type of fertilizer will give the nitrogen to the plants slowly over a longer period of time. Apply 20 to 30 pounds per 1,000 square feet thoroughly mixed in the upper four inches of soil a few days before seeding.

To get rid of grubs and worms that will injure a lawn, rake seven to ten pounds of arsenate of lead into the upper inch of soil a few days before seeding. Complete mixing of all materials into the soil is important.

After the lawn fertilizer and limestone and other materials are in the soil, smooth the seedbed with a drag or by use of the wooden rake. Then roll with a heavy roller to provide a smooth, firm seedbed. Loosen the top quarter inch with the wooden rake or a light harrow to -provide the germinating layer for the grass seed.

August 15 to the end of September is the best time to seed a lawn. This is nature’s time of seeding; weed competition is at a minimum and the rainy season helps the lawn get a good start.

Try to choose a seed mixture that is suitable to your climate and soil and to the use the future lawn will get. Don’t use cheap seed; it’s labor that you’ll be wasting if you do.

Seed when the soil is moist and the top fairly dry. Grass seed is very light, so it’s best not to seed on windy days. A good idea is to divide the seed into two equal parts and sow half in one direction and half in a direction at right angles to the first. This helps to insure uniform distribution of the seed. Seed at the recommended rates for the mixture you use. Seed can be cast by hand for small areas or a seeder or spreader used for large areas.

After seeding, rake very lightly in two directions at right angles to each other. Use a wooden rake and only pull it toward you. Pushing back may uncover some of the seed. It’s very important not to press too heavily, for this will bury some of the seed too deep and cause uneven germination. Too deep seeds may never germinate.

After raking, roll lightly in two directions. This firms the soil around the seed and hastens germination. A water ballast roller with most of the water removed is about right for this.

As soon as the seed starts to germinate, the lawn should be sprinkled gently and thoroughly with a fine spray. Don’t let the soil become dry. As soon as the lawn is well up, deeper. thorough soakings are needed for deep rooting. However, caution is needed lest the ground become too wet. Saturation of the soil will produce a stagnant condition and poor aeration.

Mow the seedling turf just as soon as you can get a bite with the mower, particularly before the grass gets more than one and one-half inches high. Use a catcher basket for the first few cuttings, so the clippings will not smother the tender seedling turf. Keep mowing until the grass stops growing for winter.

Fertilizer and Lime

Both spring and fall, it’s a good idea to apply 15 to 20 pounds per 1,000 square feet of complete turf fertilizer to the lawn. The best fertilizer is an 8-64 of 8.6-2 with at least 40 per cent of the nitrogen in natural organic form.

It always pays to go easy with lime on lawns. Turf grasses like a slightly acid soil of about pH 6.0. If they are strongly acid, 50 pounds of limestone per 1,000 square feet may he added. If in doubt, get in touch with your county agricultural agent or state experiment station for information about a soil test. Or you can easily make your own test with a kit.

Weeds and moss on a lawn usually indicate lack of plant food rather than lack of lime. The best defense against weeds is healthy, vigorous turf.

Keep the lawn mowed. When the lawn is new, clippings should be removed to prevent their matting down and smothering the new turf. After the lawn is well established, short clippings may be left on to provide nitrogen for the grass.

Cut the grass short-3/4 to 1 inch in height. We used to think that longer grass cut at 1-1/2 to 2-1/2 inches was the healthiest, but years of observations on the experimental turf plots at the Rhode Island Agricultural Experiment Station show the opposite. Lawns kept cut at an inch in height or less last longer and look better.

Someone once said that burning leaves was like burning dollar bills. That’s true, but the lawn is still no place for them. Rake them off in the fall, for they will form a mat and smother the grass plants.

Reseeding Bare Patches

Reseeding can be done either in spring or fall, though fall is the best. Thin or bare spots can be scratched up with an iron tooth rake to allow addition of any necessary lime and fertilizer before seeding. Seed as described under making a new lawn. If seeding is done in the spring, it should be just as soon as possible to give the new grass plants a chance before the weeds come.

Grass plants often heave from frost action. In spring, after all necessary reseeding and renovation are done, roll the lawn with a water ballast roller with enough water in it to press the heaved areas back into the ground. It’s best to roll in two directions.

A compost application once a year will help keep the lawn level and smooth and also give added food to the grass. Make the compost with two parts garden loam, one part clean sharp sand and one part well decomposed organic matter (leaves and grass clippings. etc.). Add no more than one-half cubic yard (10 bushels) per 1,000 square feet. It should not be more than ‘one-fourth inch at any one spot. The back of a wooden rake, can be used to work the compost in around roots and stems. Apply either in spring or fall during a period of vigorous growth.

With some of the new chemicals available, several of the worst weed enemies of the lawn can he gotten rid of. Dandelions, plantain and other broad-leaved weeds are killed by applications of 2,4-D.

It’s wise to carefully follow the manufacturer’s directions for these chemicals. If used properly, there is no danger of damaging the lawn.

Cheap, hasty lawn construction does not pay. It’s expensive to try to correct a lawn’s faults after it’s growing. Haphazard care is costly, too, for no matter how well a lawn is constructed it will go downhill without good care. A well-built, well cared for lawn will truly be a carpet in your own outdoor living room!

Excavation can be pretty hard if you do not get the right people to do it. That is why you need to make sure that when you are getting Virginia excavation, you are asking the right questions and looking into the right things.

When looking at what needs to be done, you can determine what sort of equipment is needed. The larger projects go a lot faster when you have certain machines. This will determine a lot about if you will use them or not.

You want to be sure that their prices are fair. Get a few bids in on a project that you have. This way you see what different people would charge you. It is a pretty price, but you should still be able to get the lowest price.

When you start looking into specific ones as you narrow down you choice, you should ask to talk with people who are references. You should be able to ask them things. Some of the things that you should ask would be if they did a decent job. You might want to ask if the prices were fair. Things like that can tell you how others feel about them.

The next thing is that they need to provide a deadline. They should say we can have this done by this date and then they should be done by that date and not any longer. This shows that they know you have a time line that you are working with and so forth.

You want a company that has insurance as well as the certification that is needed to handle the equipment. If something is done wrong or if something goes wrong, they should have the means to fix it for you. You should not have to worry about if they are then qualified to do the job. Many fail to do this part and they wish they did not.

Now, that you have an idea of what to look for, you are ready to call a few places. Ask for references. Get a feel for them. If something seems off, keep calling. You might find a company that you feel more at ease with. There are plenty of companies who can do this in Virginia. You just have to be careful in choosing. These will ensure that you get the right people and other conditions. Good luck choosing the company that works for you!

Do you love working in your yard on the weekends, and hate having to go to the office? You may be a prime candidate to have a landscaping business. Others who may not like doing outside work, may well be willing to pay you well to do this work for them. This will make you and them both happy.

Having a landscaping business can be ideal. You are able to work for yourself doing something that you love. You set your own hours and decide how much or how little work you will do. There are little overhead expenses, especially if you already do a lot of this work in your own yard.

In order to start this business, you must have at least a reasonable knowledge of plants. You will need to know which plants grow best in which areas and which groupings of plants work best. Keep in mind that landscaping can include things other than plants, as well. Various stones, or artwork can also be used to improve curb appeal.

Some states will require you to be certified before you can begin your new career in landscaping. The courses usually range from only six to eight weeks and are usually offered at many local community colleges. Reading up-to-date books on landscaping can also keep you in touch with the more popular landscaping trends.

Once you have decided to start your business, there are still some other things you need to keep in mind. You will need to have ways to advertise your business. A wonderful way to begin is to have people spread the word about your business by word of mouth. After you have completed a few jobs, these people may be willing to tell others about you. An inexpensive way to advertise is to have some business cards printed. Once you have these, make sure you always have some on hand to give to any prospective clients. You may also want to consider taking out ads in your local newspaper, in various directories, mailers, or even on your own web site. The more you advertise, the more likely you are to attract customers.

As in any business, you need to make sure you are professional at all times. If you make a good impression, your clients are likely to call you back and tell others about your work. No matter how good your work is, if you do not act professionally, you may lose clients.

Of course, with your own business, you need to make certain that you charge clients a fair rate. Doing research on landscaping prices in your area can help make sure that you do not over or under charge for your services. Also think about having some incentives, especially for new customers. Reduced rates for your first visit or any other reasonable deal may help you to gain and keep more customers. Understanding at least basic business practices is also a must for any business owner.

To have a landscaping business is the dream of many people. If you do good work, work in a professional manner, and advertise effectively, you may find making money doing something you love, not a dream, but a reality.

You can take advantage of this Orbitz promotion code to lower your cost on your next vacation so you can keep more cash for your landscaping business.

Residents of Jacksonville like their town to look nice and caring for the trees in the neighborhoods are part of the process. Dying trees should be removed. Tree pruning and tree trimming should be kept up throughout, but it is not for everyone. Finding a local tree service company is in your best interest.

A Jacksonville tree service company can help those people who have trees that need to be pruned, trimmed or cut down. Different reasons can cause a tree to die. For instance, a storm in the area can cause a tree to fall, even die. Now you are stuck with large branches in your yard and a tree that is not nice to look at. You can call a tree service company for help with this.

If a tree in your yard is dying, you may need to remove it completely. If there is no way of saving the tree, remove it out of respect of the appearance of your neighborhood. You can notice if your tree is dying because irregular spots on the leaves, brown spots or holes on the tree.

Weather is one of the reasons why a tree can die, if the tree does not get enough rain for example. Construction can be another cause of tree damage, in addition fertilizing and spraying is another cause. A local tree company can evaluate your trees and decide what the next step of action will be.

If you are redoing your backyard, you may want some trees removed. Although you can do most of the renovations, removing a tree is not a project to take on. Many times a person cannot cut down a tree for safety reasons. For instance, telephone wires may be in the way. This is the job of a local tree company. These companies have enough experience to complete the project successfully. They can also discard the unwanted tree.

It is also important to keep your tree groomed well. By this I mean, they should be trimmed and pruned to look nice. Just as stylists are trained to cut hair, these professionals are trained to cut trees. Trying this at home is risky because one wrong cut can kill a tree. Let them do the work.

Trees are an important part of our neighborhoods, Jacksonville included. A local tree service company can care for the trees whether your need pruning, trimming or removing it altogether. By having a professional company care for your trees, it will ensure that your neighborhood will look and stay nice.

A Jacksonville tree service is experienced in treating sick trees or those that just need a haircut. A local tree service can keep your plantings healthy.

June brings many wonders. In the insect world few are more delightful than the arrival of the gay and debonair yellow swallow-tail butterfly. Skimming the tree tops gleefully, this flash of sunshine makes us take notice, as it contrasts vividly against the green of the trees.

The tiger swallow-tail is one of our most familiar butterflies, and its range over all the United States makes it an obvious candidate for the “national butterfly.” It is found in the country or city, in the mountains, fields and forests.

The name tiger swallowtail refers to the black tiger-like vertical markings along the upper wings, the innermost one of which extends through the lower wings. Swallowtail applies to the long, narrow projections at the ends of the lower wings, suggestive of the pointed tail of the swallow. In addition to the yellow and black coloring, there are bright orange and blue spots on the bottom wings that make it more colorful at close range than it appears in flight.

A roamer of the tree tops, Papilio turunus is a strong, swift flier and an aerial acrobat of distinction. It is one of the most difficult butterflies to capture; even when it alights on a flower to feed, it often keeps vibrating its wings steadily, as if ready to take flight at the sudden approach of danger. Occasionally it will dive into the funnel of the tawny daylily, and it is then that it is easily imprisoned. The legs and body of the lovely creature you withdraw will be covered with powdery yellow pollen.

To see the tiger swallow-tail feeding on a clump of blue delphinium is indeed a beautiful sight. Whether motionless or vibrating its wings, the bright yellow on a background of blue in the brilliance of the sunshine is not easily forgotten.

The larva of Papilio is a foreboding creature. A dark green color, the front part of the body is large, and has a stripe of yellow and black across the back. Two curious greenish yellow spots in front of the stripes, enclosed with a purple spot, look like real eyes. The caterpillar weaves a silk carpet on the leaf on which to rest when not feeding. The chrysalis which follows is brown and greenish-brown, and is held in place on the twig with silk thread.

The green or greenish blue eggs are laid on the leaves of cherry, wild or cultivated, but because of the wide range of this butterfly, many other trees and shrubs are selected. There are two broods, the last wintering in the chrysalis stage.
