As a child I remember picking out roses from my Grandma’s garden and smelling their beautiful scent all through the day. In fact, there were always roses in my Grandma’s home, she loved the flowers, and said they made her extremely happy. And why not? Roses have the ability to brighten up anyone’s day and they are, undoubtedly, extremely beautiful flowers with an amazingly beautiful smell.

Choosing Wisely

Taking tips from my grandma, when I moved into my own little house, I decided to have a rose garden all of my own. Designing a rose garden isn’t as Herculean a task as you might think it to be. In fact, you can go in for landscape roses; they make the exteriors of any house beautiful and appealing. The added bonus is the fragrance. The delicate fragrance wafting out from the roses is sure to bring a smile to your guests’ faces.

If you’re looking for the perfect roses for your garden, chances are, you won’t have a hard time at all because there are many different kinds of roses out there to suit every palette. But the problem is to choose the right roses for your landscape and the ones which will let you attain the right design.

You can also have a trellis against your wall and have the blossoms climb onto it. If, on the other hand you don’t have the facilities for a trellis, then you can always go in for a true climbing rose. The best part about these roses is that they allow you to train the plant in many different avatars and looks.

Landscaping Tips

If you are looking to design a rose garden which is full of vibrant splashes of colour, make sure that you choose flowers with colours that complement their surrounding landscape, it just won’t do to have shocking bursts of colour here and there! If you have a stone drive or a marble entranceway, then you’re best bet lies with a simple arrangement of pink roses. They make for a classy statement.

Or, you can also have white tea roses if you have a traditional cottage with brick red exteriors. If you have grey coloured walls then crimson roses make for a striking contrast and give your home an old world look and feel. Roses come in many colours; all you need to do is find the one which goes best with your home.

Apart from colour and appearance, you also need to keep in mind the growth requirements for the roses of your choice. But, not to worry, roses are flowers which can survive in a variety of climates so it won’t be hard for you to select a variety which can survive in your area. Have fun designing your rose garden!

Learn how to design your rose garden at home. Important things in delicate rose care is finally discovered.

Breeders from all over the world have forever been attempting to breed roses that are disease resistant; will grow in most climates; retain a lovely form and are hardy. Knockout roses likely come close to ticking all those boxes.

This is an excellent rose for your beginner rose gardener to plant mainly because it is so hardy and disease resistant. It does not grow too tall or big so you don’t have to be too concerned about pruning it into shape because it retains a small compact shape usually. It is even sold as being “self cleaning” meaning that the once a bloom has completed flowering, the petals fall freely from the stem, reducing the gardener time on having to deadhead the spent flowers.

It is fine if you don’t mind getting a lot of rosehips on your plant, nevertheless, when you prefer to have far more blooms rather than rosehips it’s recommended to give them a tidy up and deadhead them frequently to encourage prolific flowering. A ton of power goes into the plant making a rosehip; vitality that could be used for that plant to develop much more flowers. So the choice is up to the gardener’s preference.

Their disease resistance is a different reason why knockout roses are good to grow for someone just starting out growing roses. Having to muck around with chemicals to spray for diseases isn’t to everyone’s liking. Because knockout roses have been bred to be resistant to diseases like black spot along with other fungal leaf disorders, you do not need to get worried about using chemicals inside your garden.

As long as knockout roses are planted in good soil that has great drainage and the position gets 4-5 hours of sun per day, your knockout roses should really prosper. Also add some compost or aged composted manures like cow manure (no fresh manures) at planting time to so your knockout rose gets off to a good start.

If you want to make your garden come to life, you need to know how to grow roses. Roses are the most favorite flowers of all time. The variable colors symbolize purity of love and lasting friendship. You do not have to be an expert gardener to grow them in your yard. All you need is a little information and tender loving care to successfully enjoy the sight of these beautiful flowers in your garden.

Know your Skill Level

Before you think on how to grow roses, you must first choose the kind of rose you want. Your choices may vary based on your skill level, garden supplies and your personal preferences. The hundreds of varieties available make your decision a little difficult. Hybrid tea types require expert skill. Unless you are a professional, this type is not advisable. For beginners, consider shrub, landscape or old garden varieties.

Consider your Garden Space

When thinking on how to grow roses, consider the space in your garden. Some varieties grow as high as 20 feet. Unless you have a whole hectare for your garden, consider cutting them before they cover your whole house. Limit the number of your plants based on your space. Leave a room for them to breathe.

Basic Requirements

Once you decide on the kind of rose to plant, you need to know the requirements on how to grow roses. Because the flowers need six hours of sunlight, choose a place that receives ample sunshine. Water them often during the first two weeks to keep them hydrated. Spring is the best season to start your project. Fertilize the soil around three months after planting.

Maintenance

Experts tell you that to learn how to grow roses, you need to treat them the way a mother will care for her children. The flowers need your time and constant attention to enjoy their beautiful bloom. Constantly check for dead and damaged branches and cut these using sharp hand shears. Mulching reduces your overall maintenance needs. It means less watering and protection from diseases. During winter, keep them warm by adding extra inches of soil to their base.

Harvesting

Once you learn how to grow roses, the exciting part is when you harvest them and turn them into beautiful bouquet. However, not all varieties can withstand this. Hybrid teas can be cut. The petals of other types fall apart during the process.

Roses are one of the most popular flowers to grow by the home gardener. Their beauty, fragrance and ability to repeat flower (modern varieties) has led to their popularity. This article discusses a few tips to help you grow roses that are healthy, will flower prolifically and that you can be proud to say you have grown.

Roses have a great need for sun so you need to plant them in an area that gets a minimum of 5-6 hours of sun a day. The reason for this is that continued flowering utilizes a lot of energy and this energy is obtained by the plant from photosynthesis. If the rose doesn’t get a lot of sun, you end up with a plant that is leggy, with sporadic flowering and that is more prevalent to being attacked by insects or disease.

Roses don’t like wet feet, so it’s important to make sure the area you plant them in is freely draining. Roses do need a regular supply of water to flower prolifically but if the water doesn’t drain away in a reasonable time period, the fine root hairs will start to disintegrate, with the roots of the plant then beginning to rot. The rose relies on the fine root hairs on the plant roots to uptake water and nutrients for the whole plants use and if these are compromised then the plant will slowly die no matter how much water or plant food it gets.

The last tip in this article deals with regular feeding of the rose bush during its growing season. If you want masses of roses on your plant that you can enjoy on the bush or cut and bring indoors to admire, it’s important to regularly feed your rose every 6 weeks in the growing season. Your local plant nursery should have a good variety of rose fertilizers for you to select from for this important task.

You can get a lot of enjoyment from growing roses and they’re not as tricky to grow as some think. By following a few basic requirements like those mentioned above, you will be richly compensated for your efforts with a rose bush that is healthy, vigorous and a prolific bloomer.

In many old homes, or homes that were purchased as such and remodeled in line with modem trends, we find rather awkward architecture. In New England, for example, there are many houses in which the living quarters and certain farm buildings were all included in one unit because of the severe winters experienced there. This resulted in typical step-down construction from a high point at one end to the low point at the far end.

Some people buy such properties, tear off some of the farm sections, and find themselves with a tall, awkward-looking home and the problem of how to improve its appearance. This can be done by various tricks of design, chief among them being the use of horizontal lines in the planting and the concealment of one end of the tall part of the building by the use of large trees, especially evergreens. Vines can also be introduced to make artificial breaks across the tall section, giving strong horizontal lines where they did not exist before. The eye follows horizontal lines more easily and quickly than it does vertical lines. Your head moves easier to look from side to side.

House on a Knoll

A house that appears to be sitting on top of a knoll is, undoubtedly, the most difficult type to landscape. If money, time, and material are available, retaining walls can be constructed to add long horizontal lines extending well beyond the actual building.

The horizontal lines will force attention to themselves, instead of to the high perched house. These retaining walls also permit the development of flat areas for suitable landscape plantings around the house.

If the ground drops away quickly on one or both sides, your objective should be to make long, wide plantings from the corners of the house out as far as possible to each side. Place the usual plants at the outside corners of the house, but as the planting extends farther away from it select plants that grow larger than those close to it. Eventually you will plant small trees, and, if you have enough space, you will finally wind up using large trees at the ends of these wing plantings.

Your goal is to have, when the plants are mature 10 to 15 years hence, a silhouette that will create a funnel effect toward your house. Admittedly it will take quite a few years to realize this, since the plants will have to be rather old before the effect will be seen. However, because you know what you are aiming at, it should not bother you although it may look a little unfinished to the casual observer.

Sometimes we encounter trouble in our landscape planning as a result of worrying about what other people will think while our planting is in its first stages. So we must train ourselves to not be too concerned over their opinions. We must always remember that in working with landscape plans you are dealing with the future, not the immediate present.

Would it not be lovely, at the end of a hard day’s work or on your day off, to relax outside on your patio deck? It is a dream that many people have. But it does not have to be only a dream. You could be really doing it within a few of weeks. You can either make the deck or patio yourself, if you are useful with your hands or you can get someone in.

The best thing to do is talk with your contractor about your plans about size and materials. If you want to have a go at making it yourself, take the dimensions to your local builders’ merchant and get them to give you a price. If you need it, they can normally recommend a contractor to you. This can be a good idea, even if it is only to get an idea about price.

There are also plenty of ‘standard’ designs available too. You could get a few gardening magazines, you will be able to tell the ones you want by their titles. You could also look on the Internet. There is also designing software for this kind of project, it just depends what you want your input to be.

You could just hand the whole task over to your builder, if that is what you want. However, I would go for a drink with my wife and take paper and pens. Over a drink or two, I would encourage us both to make a few rough plans of what we would like. Then you can discuss and amalgamate the plans.

You also have to come to a decision whether you want a raised deck or one at ground level. A raised, wooden deck might help keep the snakes at bay, but a stone patio places you right in the middle of your garden and flowers.

A consideration, depending on where you live, could be the use of patio heaters. If you think that you may have to use patio heating at various times of the year because of the weather, you might not want your patio deck made of timber. After spending time and money on your new patio deck, you will want to make use of it whether it is a bit chilly or not, which is where the heaters come in.

Furthermore, patio heaters are not that pricey any more and not that dear to run. If you add a mosquito trap and some lighting, you will have a pleasure to enjoy for the rest of your life.

Owen Jones, the author of this piece, writes on many subjects, but is currently involved with commercial patio heaters.

Creating a home garden landscape is very rewarding as well as therapeutic. When you have a beautiful landscape, it improves the worth of your home. It will take a lot of your time, a lot of effort to see it through, and of course money to get it to look the way that you want it to but it will be worth while in the end.

Sufficient and wise planning however, are keys to success. First, survey your present area. Look at your garden and decide what you desire with the available space. Will it be for fun, play, home picnicking, or mini-farming? Fixing your mind on a specific theme will help you put all other things in place.

You need to assess the current condition of the area. Take into consideration what is already there; fences, plants, trees, and sheds or buildings and work them into your plan. You need to bring out what you like most and get rid of what you don’t like or redo it if possible. When considering new plants you want to make your selection very carefully. What you decide on depends on your location and the climate there. You may need to determine what type of soil you have and how much sun and shade your area will have. Some plants do better in the shade while others must have direct sun.

Sketch out how you want your garden to look. Include as much details as possible because you will be using this plan the entire time. If you work in landscaping at all you will know how important these plans are. Determine your entrance to your garden, the paths for walking, how you want the border, do you want a deck, hedges, or pool included in the plan too? You can buy computer software that will help you draw out your plan or you can hire a professional artist to do it for you. If you like to do things on your own, get a piece of paper out and draw the plans up by yourself.

You can create a garden that is elaborate or luxurious as you want it to be. You need to remember that your budget will limit you to what you can buy. In order to stay within your budget rate everything that is on your list and buy according to the most necessary items. It’s easy to get caught up in the moment and think that something is needed when it can really wait. That is why it is a good idea to have the visual of what you want your garden to look like.

It is important to prioritize caring for your greens and improving your soil. Learn how to plant and prune right. Get advice on how to improve the soil quality. Use compost and helpful ingredients. You can purchase compost and you can also make your own. The latter will save you a lot of money. You may also be on the lookout for areas, as well as stores, demolition sites, organizations, and residents that freely give stones, bricks, trees, compost, and mulch. You may also think of creative ways on saving money on purchases.

Start a neighborhood plant trade. Search for places that offer discounts on plants and see what you can buy. You can also watch for special closeout deals, going out of business bargains, or seasonal sales.

You can hire professionals to landscape your home garden but you can also do the work yourself! Landscapers raise up their prices so buying your own stuff and placing them yourself will be way cheaper. Remember though, your expertise and abilities have limits. Know when you need the assistance of pros. Ask around for affordable rates, checking reputability. Some offer service packages. Check out what options you have and what services you can get at the best possible price.
